This table gives the essence of ten of the basic breathing patterns in Breathwalk. The ratio and type of breathing are listed along with some key words for their primary effects. When timed to your walking pace, they will allow you to change your energy levels and to direct your moods.
Students of Breathwalk often ask about the ratios used in the Breathwalk patterns. They want to know if they can use other ratios. âWhy do we just use these ratios?â We use only certain basic, even-numbered ratios in Breathwalk breathing patterns. These have been well tested for many generations and lead to stable, healthy, predictable states of mood, mind, and energy. Only certain combinations of breathing and movement create a powerful, stable, and predictable result. Just as a cake recipe needs a correct proportion of ingredients in order to rise and taste delicious, the elements in Breathwalk work when in correct proportion. The particular ratios we use in Breathwalk patterns come from centuries of experience in kundalini yoga and from the insights of modern research into biomechanics.
We can certainly imagine other ratios. We could try 3/15, or 7/9, or 11/6. The number of possible ratios is huge, but not all ratios are stable. Most are unstable and lead to erratic moods or uneven energy changes. This is very important. You can imagine spinning on ice skates in hundreds of ways, but only certain patterns keep you balanced without a spill. It works the same way with directed breathing in Breathwalk. Walking with the breath in ratios, spinning on skates, and racing a horse are all subject to the inherent laws of physics and physiology. The ratios we use in the Breathwalk patterns respect both and give you elegant and repeatable results. They match breath to the inner ratios in the design of your body.
During some of the research reported in later chapters, we found good mathematical models that showed why the â doublingâ of the steps in the ratios optimized the use of breath and energy. Just try them yourself and trust the experience of people who have Breathwalked consistently for years. With these ratios, the patterns feel great and can be easily learned.
When our walking movement synchronizes in a Breathwalk pattern, we move, almost glide, as we vitalize. By using the different patterns in a Breathwalk program, we can select and refine the final state of mood, energy, and mind that we want.
